The Experience

Why a Coastal Tour Rather Than a Climb

What you get when the road, not the staircase, is the point of the day.

  • Panoramic views over the Cantabrian Sea and the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve
  • Run in the guide's car at no extra cost, or follow in your own vehicle

  • Tour of the Bizkaia coast
  • Breathtaking secret view of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe
  • Visit to Mundaka
  • Visit to Bermeo
  • Visit to Gernika
  • Panoramic views of the Cantabrian Sea and Urdaibai Bay Biosphere Reserve

How the Basque Coast Day Runs

Bilbao, the cliffs, the viewpoint, then east along the estuary.

  1. Pick Up at the Guggenheim

Or from your hotel by arrangement. The tour runs in the guide's car at no extra cost, and you can follow in your own vehicle if you are already driving in the region.

  2. The Cliffs West of Bakio

Rock formations and sea stacks along a stretch of coast most day trips drive past on their way to the car park, with stops for photographs rather than a fixed schedule.

  3. The Gaztelugatxe Viewpoint

The islet, the causeway and the hermitage seen from above — the classic frame, without the 1.2 km descent and the 241 steps. This tour does not cross to the rock.

  4. Mundaka, Bermeo and Gernika

East into the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve: the estuary at Mundaka, the fishing harbour at Bermeo, and Gernika with its mosaic reproduction of Picasso's painting.

How Much Coast Do You Want?

Four hours by car, ten hours by coach, or three and a half hours on foot at the islet — the three shapes a Basque Coast day takes from Bilbao.

Coast vs Climb

Most Gaztelugatxe Tours Are Really Basque Coast Tours

Once you notice that, the choice stops being about the islet and starts being about how much of the coastline you want.

Almost every product sold as a “Gaztelugatxe tour from Bilbao” is a Basque Coast day trip with the islet as its headline stop. Look at the itineraries side by side and the pattern is obvious: Bilbao, the Bakio coast, Gaztelugatxe, then east into the Urdaibai reserve for two or three of Bermeo, Mundaka and Gernika. The islet is what fills the search box. The coast is what fills the day.

What the Bizkaia coastline actually is

This is the Bay of Biscay, not the Mediterranean. The colour is grey-green more often than turquoise, the swell is constant, and the geology is the draw: flysch — alternating layers of hard and soft seabed rock, tilted almost vertical and eroded into shelves, arches and sea stacks that read like pages of a book stood on end.

The estuary behind it is the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, 23,000 hectares across 22 municipalities, declared by UNESCO in 1984. It runs from the Oka river mouth at Mundaka inland to Gernika, taking in wetland, oak woodland, beaches and cliffs. Most of the driving on this tour happens inside it, which is why the road between stops is part of the product rather than dead time.

The tour that skips the staircase — deliberately

The four-hour coastal tour featured on this page carries the highest average rating on the site, 4.9, and it does something none of the day trips do: it takes you to a viewpoint over Gaztelugatxe rather than across the causeway and up the 241 steps.

Be clear about that before you book, in both directions. If the climb is why you are coming, this is the wrong tour and you want an access-included departure instead. If the climb is the reason you were hesitating — a knee, a stroller, a schedule, or simply no wish to queue on a staircase — this is the tour that gets you the photograph and the coastline without any of it.

The other practical differences: it runs by car rather than coach, so the group is small; the guide’s car is included at no extra cost, or you can follow in your own vehicle; and food and drink are optional extras. The caveat is volume. Forty-six reviews at 4.9 is a strong signal but a thin one next to the 3,079 behind the flagship, so read the recent ones rather than the average alone.

The broader Basque Coast options from Bilbao

If you want more coastline than four hours allows, three other shapes exist on this site.

The ten-hour flagship is the maximum-coverage version: Gaztelugatxe with guaranteed access, Bermeo, Mundaka, Gernika and a txakoli tasting, at $80 and 4.7 from more than 3,000 guests. The nine-hour Bermeo route trades Mundaka for a 105-minute lunch stop in a working fishing port and over two hours in Gernika. The six-hour Mundaka route is the cheapest complete itinerary at $63, in a private minibus with hotel pickup on most options.

Two departures head further afield — one combining Bilbao with San Sebastián, another running to Biarritz and the French Basque coast. Both leave Bilbao, both are long days, and both put more time in the car than on the coast path. They are worth considering only if San Sebastián is not already on your itinerary.

Choosing between them

Ask two questions. Do you want to climb the islet? And how many hours do you have? Those two answers pick your tour almost on their own — the half-day options if you want the rock in a morning, the Bermeo or Mundaka routes if you want a full day with villages, this page’s coastal tour if the staircase is out, and the private tours if there are four or more of you and you would rather set the pace yourselves.

If you are still working out whether Gaztelugatxe justifies the day at all, is Gaztelugatxe worth visiting makes the case both ways. Otherwise, check availability for the coastal tour above.
