How the Bermeo & Gernika Day Runs
Two central meeting points, the coast, lunch in a working port, and the oak.
Meet Outside, Not Inside
Two options in central Bilbao: outside Meliá Bilbao at 09:20, or outside the Sercotel Coliseo on Urkixo Zumarkalea at 09:30. Both meeting points are on the street — the operator is emphatic about this — and a missed bus counts as a no-show.
Gaztelugatxe, About Two Hours
Down to sea level, across the stone causeway and up the 241 steps to the hermitage. Tickets and entry fees are included, so the timed access slot is already handled for your group.
Bermeo — 30 Guided Minutes, Then 105 Free
One of the oldest fishing ports on the Biscay coast. The guide walks you through the old quarter, hands out specific recommendations for seafood and pintxos, then leaves you to eat.
Gernika, Just Over Two Hours
The Casa de Juntas, seat of Bizkaian political life, and the Tree of Gernika beside it. Entry to the building is not guaranteed — capacity limits and public events can close it, in which case you see the oak from outside.

Bermeo or Mundaka?
The Case for Putting Bermeo in Your Day
Two itineraries leave Bilbao with almost the same stop list. The one you want depends on whether you would rather eat or read.
Two of the best-reviewed departures from Bilbao run almost the same route — Gaztelugatxe first, then east into the Urdaibai reserve, then Gernika — and differ mainly in whether the middle stop is Bermeo or Mundaka. Both are ten minutes apart on the same estuary. Choosing between them is not a coin toss, and this page exists because the listings never explain the difference.
Bermeo is the stop you eat in
Bermeo is a working fishing port, not a resort: a harbour full of boats that go out, a steep old quarter above it, and the deepest seafaring tradition on this coast. It is also where the nine-hour departure parks you for the longest single block of free time on any tour on this site — 30 guided minutes followed by 105 minutes to yourself, with the guide naming specific places for seafood and pintxos before the group breaks up.
That allocation is not accidental. A nine-hour day needs a real lunch in it, and Bermeo has more places to have one than Mundaka does. If the food side of the Basque Country is part of why you came, this is the itinerary that makes room for it.
Gernika gets more than a photo stop
The other structural difference is at the end of the day. Where the six-hour trips give Gernika 45 to 90 minutes, this one gives it just over two hours, which is enough to go inside the Casa de Juntas — the assembly house of the Bizkaian parliament, and one of the few buildings left standing after the bombing of 26 April 1937. The Tree of Gernika stands beside it.
Read the operator’s caveat honestly, because it is stated up front rather than buried: entry to the Casa de Juntas is not guaranteed. Capacity limits, official business and public events can close it, and on those days the group sees the oak from outside. That is a real risk on a stop you may be choosing this tour for.
The access slot, and the one that costs less
Both Bermeo departures include the Gaztelugatxe entry. The nine-hour trip lists “necessary tickets and entry fees” among its inclusions; the six-hour alternative puts it in its title — Gaztelugatxe with Access — and gives you two free hours at the islet rather than two guided ones, for $70 instead of $81.
The six-hour version is rated 4.3 against the longer trip’s 4.8, and the pattern in its reviews is pacing: it compresses Bermeo into 30 minutes and Gernika into 45. If the islet is the point and the villages are a bonus, that trade is fine and it is the cheaper ticket. If you want Bermeo and Gernika to be more than a photograph, take the nine hours.
What this itinerary does not do
It does not stop in Mundaka. If the estuary village and its surf break matter to you, the Mundaka and Gernika combination covers those instead — and carries the cheapest full itinerary on the site at $63. The ten-hour flagship is the only departure that manages Bermeo and Mundaka in one day, with a txakoli tasting at the end.
It also involves a genuine hike. The operator lists this tour as not accessible for guests with mobility problems or slow walking, and there is no hotel pickup — you make your own way to one of the two meeting points. If neither works for you, compare the private departures or the car-based Basque Coast tours, which reach a viewpoint over the islet without the staircase.
Still weighing the transport question rather than the itinerary? Start with how to get to Gaztelugatxe from Bilbao, then check availability once you have picked a date.

What Guests Say About the Bermeo Route
Ratings and review counts are the tour operators' live figures on GetYourGuide and may shift slightly day to day.
"I booked this excursion to visit Gaztelugatxe, Bermeo, and Gernika, and I was completely satisfied. The itinerary is wonderful and the organization is impeccable from start to finish. The real highlight of the tour, however, was Borja: an exceptional guide who was extremely helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable. He engaged us with fascinating stories, historical curiosities, and constant attention to the whole group, always making us feel at ease. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to discover these wonders with the added bonus of a super competent professional. Thank you very much, Borja!"
"This trip allowed us to see all of Gastelugatxe, Bremeo and Guernica. We had a superb tour with a guide Borja and We have to say that he was probably the best guide we ever had. Borja had so many interesting remarks to say both about the tour and also about everything Basque Country. What made this trip so great was also the fact that Borja was super authentic and genuinely cared for us to have the best trip possible. This trip was genuinely great!"

"Borja was a great guide. Very knowledgeable. The climb to Gaztelugatxe is a challenge but worth it. And the afternoon stop to Gernika was a great introduction to Baske history and culture."
"Many thanks to Igor!! Excellent guide, amazing day trip!!"
"Was a very nice trip and the guide (Borja :-) was very enthousiast, best guide ever : )"
"The guide Oni was excellent! In addition to being very agile and competent in leading the entire trip alone in a bilingual manner (everything she said in Spanish, she translated into English), she maintained a great pace and shared very interesting information. This tour is very much worth it!"
"Amazing place, as written on the posting, do prepare for a bit of hike and Basque weather for the Gaztelugatxe part. Good food stop in Bermeo and a bit of history walk in Guernica ends the trip just right. Our guide Onintze is very helpful, knowledgeable, and patient!"

Gaztelugatxe, Bermeo & Gernika Tours — FAQ
Meeting points, the access slot, lunch in Bermeo and what can close the Casa de Juntas.
Yes, on both. The nine-hour departure lists necessary tickets and entry fees among its inclusions, and the six-hour alternative includes access tickets to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe where they are required. That means the timed slot the Bizkaia council issues is handled for your group and you do not book one yourself. Full detail in our tickets and reservations guide.
The nine-hour trip has two meeting points, both on the street outside the hotel rather than inside it: Meliá Bilbao at 09:20 and the Sercotel Coliseo on Urkixo Zumarkalea at 09:30. You do not need to tell the operator which you will use. The six-hour trip meets at the tourist office bus stop next to the Guggenheim at 08:50 for a 09:00 departure.
On the nine-hour tour, 30 guided minutes followed by 105 minutes of free time — the longest single free block of any departure on this site, and it is timed so you can have lunch there. The six-hour tour allows 30 minutes in total, which is a walk through the old quarter and not much else.
No. Food and drink are excluded on both Bermeo itineraries. What the nine-hour tour does instead is build the time in: the guide recommends specific local spots for seafood and pintxos before the group splits up in Bermeo, and you pay for your own.
Usually, but the operator states clearly that it is not guaranteed. Capacity limits, political business and public events can close the building, and on those days the group sees the Tree of Gernika from outside instead. If entering the assembly house is the main reason you are booking, be aware of that risk.
Time and pacing. The nine-hour trip at $81 gives Gaztelugatxe two hours, Bermeo 135 minutes and Gernika just over two, and is rated 4.8 by 824 guests. The six-hour trip at $70 gives Gaztelugatxe two free hours but compresses Bermeo to 30 minutes and Gernika to 45, and is rated 4.3 by 570 guests — the reviews consistently name the pacing.
No. Bermeo and Mundaka sit ten minutes apart on the same estuary but the itineraries pick one or the other. For Mundaka see the Mundaka and Gernika tours, or take the ten-hour flagship, which is the only departure covering both villages plus a txakoli tasting.
Not on either Bermeo departure — hotel pickup and drop-off are explicitly excluded, and you make your own way to the meeting point. Both are central and reachable on foot, by tram or by metro from most Bilbao accommodation. For door-to-door service see the private tours.
Harder than most people expect. From the car park you descend over a kilometre to sea level, cross the causeway and then climb 241 uneven stone steps. The nine-hour operator describes it as a hike and lists the tour as not accessible for guests with mobility problems or slow walking.
Proper walking shoes, a waterproof layer and a water bottle at minimum. The tours run rain or shine, the coast is exposed, and the final section of the staircase catches the wind. Add sunscreen and sunglasses between June and September, and carry ID.
Not necessarily. The nine-hour operator notes that the order of places visited can change on some dates for operational reasons, and seats in the van or bus are not assigned. The stops themselves do not change — only the sequence.
Yes, with conditions. The nine-hour tour applies a child rate only when a child shares with one paying adult, to a maximum of two children per adult. The six-hour tour gives children aged 2 to 12 a 50% discount provided they are accompanied by at least two adults. Both involve the full staircase.
