How the Mundaka & Gernika Day Runs

Pickup, two guided hours on the rock, the estuary, and the Basque Country's most loaded town square.

  1. Pickup — Hotel or the Puppy

The private and small-group options collect you from your Bilbao hotel. The cheapest bilingual group option meets at the Puppy, the flower-covered dog sculpture outside the Guggenheim, instead.

  2. Two Guided Hours at Gaztelugatxe

The longest single block at the islet of any six-hour departure: the descent, the causeway, the 241 steps and the hermitage, with the entry ticket already included in your booking.

  3. Mundaka, 90 Minutes

A fishing village on the left bank of the Urdaibai estuary with a compact old quarter, a harbour, and the best left-hand surf wave in Europe breaking off the river mouth — up to 400 metres of it.

  4. Gernika, 90 Minutes

The Tree of Gernika, the assembly house of the Bizkaian parliament and the tiled reproduction of Picasso's mural, with the guide filling in what 26 April 1937 meant to the Basque Country.

Mundaka Route vs the Alternatives

Why This One Is Cheapest

Six Hours, Three Stops, $63 — and the One Condition to Read First

A minimum group size sits behind the price. It is not a catch, but it is the thing to check before you build a day around it.

At $63 this is the least expensive complete Gaztelugatxe itinerary leaving Bilbao, and with 2,316 reviews at 4.7 it is also the second most-reviewed tour on the site. Cheap and popular together usually means a compromise somewhere. Here it means two things, and both are worth understanding before you book.

The price comes from the vehicle, not from cutting the visit

This tour runs a private air-conditioned vehicle, not a scheduled coach. That is why hotel pickup is available at all, and it is also why the operator needs a minimum of two adults to run a departure — four on the cheapest bilingual group option.

If your date does not reach the minimum, you are contacted at least three days in advance and offered an alternative date, a different tour or a full refund. Nothing is lost except the slot in your itinerary, which is exactly the thing a short trip cannot easily absorb. Book early in your stay rather than on your last day, and you have room to move.

The other thing the price does not cut is time on the rock. Six hours is the shortest three-stop itinerary here, and yet it gives Gaztelugatxe two guided hours — the same as tours running three hours longer, and more than the ten-hour flagship’s 110 minutes. The compression happens on the road, not at the islet.

Mundaka is a different kind of stop from Bermeo

The alternative combination swaps Mundaka for Bermeo, ten minutes away on the same estuary, and the two villages do not do the same job in a day.

Bermeo is a working port and the place tours put their lunch block. Mundaka is smaller and quieter: a whitewashed seafront, a steep old quarter, a church above the harbour, and a view straight down the Urdaibai estuary — 23,000 hectares of wetland, oak woodland and cliff declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1984. Its fame comes from the water. The left-hand wave that breaks over the sandbar at the river mouth is rated the best in Europe and among the ten best in the world, running up to 400 metres when the swell is right.

Ninety minutes there is a walk and a long look, not a meal. That is the honest trade: this itinerary is scenery and history where the Bermeo route is food and time.

Gernika, and what the guide is actually for

The last 90 minutes go to Gernika, and this is where a guide earns the fare. The Tree of Gernika, the assembly house behind it and the tiled reproduction of Picasso’s mural are, without context, three things in a small town. With it they are the seat of Bizkaian self-government, the target of 26 April 1937, and the reason a painting in Madrid carries the name of a Basque market town.

The operator sells this as the cultural half of the day, and the reviews back that reading. If the Basque Country’s politics interest you more than its harbours, this is the itinerary.

Who should book something else

Anyone who cannot manage stairs. The operator states plainly that stairs and uneven terrain make this tour unsuitable for people with reduced mobility, and lists wheelchair users and travellers with a low fitness level as not suitable. The car-based Basque Coast tours reach a viewpoint over the islet with no staircase at all.

Anyone travelling alone on a fixed date, because of the two-adult minimum. Anyone who wants lunch built into the day — take the nine-hour Bermeo trip. And anyone with only a morning, who should look at the half-day departures instead.

If the transport question is still open rather than the itinerary one, read how to get to Gaztelugatxe from Bilbao and do you need a reservation first. Otherwise, check availability for your dates.

"Our guide Asier was incredible! He was so knowledgeable and kind and the tour itself was amazing. The coach was comfortable and we were well warned/prepared for the hike. We had plenty of time at each location and were still back in Bilbao at 3:30pm!"

Zoe Australia

"Nicely planned tour and a perfect length. I’m super glad I did it. Aseir was a fantastic and engaging guide. He kept things moving along, although we didn’t feel rushed. The recommended lunch spot in Mundaka is 👌🏼"

Ben United Kingdom

"It would have been nice to have a little more time for Mundaka, or to visit Bermeo instead of Mundaka"

Antonio Italy

"The trip was very well organized, everything perfectly according to plan. Very nice, new bus with comfortable seats. Knowledgeable guide with perfect English and interesting stories. Enough time to enjoy Gaztelugatxe and Mundaka on your own. A relatively slow pace makes it not too tiring (although both Gaztelugatxe and Mundaka require a steep walking up and down). I can recommend."

Aleksandra Poland

"We had a wonderful trip to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. The hike was challenging in parts, especially the steps, but the breathtaking views made it completely worth it. The scenery along the coast is absolutely beautiful, and reaching the top was a great experience. Our guide Josh was friendly, knowledgeable, and made the tour very enjoyable . Driver Amir was very good .I would definitely recommend this trip to anyone visiting the Basque Country. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for some walking!"

Samar United Arab Emirates

"In a short time, you will get a good impression of Basque nature, culture, and history. The live guide provides a lot of interesting information about this. Transportation by luxury coach makes traveling comfortable. That's nice, because visiting the monastery at Gaztelugatxe in particular is a strenuous walk. Visiting the monastery involves a stone staircase, and a good level of fitness is recommended for that. But this tour is definitely recommended."

Dave Netherlands

"Excellent trip. Our guide and driver were amazing. The perfect mix of activities. Would highly recommend."
