Where to Stay Near Gaztelugatxe in Winter
Bakio, Bermeo or Bilbao? Where to stay for San Juan de Gaztelugatxe from November to March: the closest beds, what stays open, parking, and bases that work without a car.
Stay in Bakio if you have a car and want the shortest drive, in Bermeo if you want a working town that doesn’t empty out in winter, and in Bilbao if you don’t drive, are joining a tour, or want museums for a rainy day. There is no hotel on the islet itself; the closest bed is a small guesthouse right at the trailhead. Before you book anything, read Is Gaztelugatxe closed today?, because winter storms and repair works matter more than which hotel you pick.

Winter booking tips
- Book free cancellation. Gaztelugatxe access can close for storms or works, and you don’t want to be locked into a coastal room you no longer need.
- Add a buffer night. Two nights on the coast give you a second chance if day one is a washout.
- Confirm the hotel and restaurant are open. Seasonal closures are common. Email the property and ask about heating, the restaurant’s days and late check-in.
- Know the ticket dates. For the rest of 2026, free tickets are required only on December 5, 6, 7, 8 and 30 (November 1 was the last controlled day in November). Daily capacity is 1,462 people, and you can book up to 10 tickets per reservation. If you don’t show up and haven’t cancelled, you can’t book again for a year. The provincial council also asks visitors to avoid December 30, a local celebration day. Details: Gaztelugatxe tickets in winter.
- Watch for repair works. Deia reported on September 21, 2026 that repairs to the walls supporting the access path are expected to take about four months and cost close to €500,000. No start date has been given, so check before you book non-refundable rates.
- Parking: Rural Bakio stays usually include it; Bermeo old town and central Bilbao often don’t.
- Pack properly: What to wear to Gaztelugatxe in winter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a hotel right next to Gaztelugatxe?
Not on the islet. The Gaztelu Begi guesthouse sits at the trailhead car park, about 800 m from the site in a straight line. Eneperi next door is a restaurant only, with no rooms.
Is Bakio or Bermeo better for visiting Gaztelugatxe?
Bakio is closer and quieter. Bermeo is livelier in winter and has a train to Bilbao. With a car, either works; without one, Bermeo’s train link is the more useful of the two.
Should I just stay in Bilbao?
Yes, if you don’t drive, are joining a tour, or are visiting for one day only. No, if you want sunrise at the steps or a relaxed coastal evening.
Are coastal hotels open in winter?
Many are, but not all. Arimune’s restaurant is listed as closed from November 2 to March 18, and Eneperi takes weekly days off. Confirm directly.
Can I get to Gaztelugatxe by public transport in winter?
On weekdays, yes: the A3518 to Bakio, then the A3524 taxi-bus. On weekends and holidays, plan for the eight-seat taxi or a tour.
Do I need a ticket in November?
No. November 1 was the only controlled day in November 2026. In December you need a free ticket on the 5th to the 8th and the 30th.
What if Gaztelugatxe is closed during my stay?
The viewpoints along the BI-3101 road still give great views, and Bilbao’s museums make a good backup. Check Is Gaztelugatxe closed today? and Gaztelugatxe in November. Game of Thrones fans can also read our Bilbao Game of Thrones tour guide.
Which base is best for families?
Ureta Landa in Bakio (studios, kitchenettes, parking) or a central Bilbao hotel with rainy-day options.
