The most useful fact about Gaztelugatxe, and the one the itineraries obscure, is that it is a two-hour site. A staircase, a chapel, a view and the walk back. Nothing on the rock rewards a fourth hour, and no tour on this site allocates one — the ten-hour flagship gives it 110 minutes and the six-hour minibus gives it two.

So a half-day tour is not a reduced version of the visit. It is the same visit, with the villages removed.

Six to ten hours in a group is a long day for what amounts to three short village walks and a lot of road, and Gaztelugatxe itself does not get any better for it. If your Bilbao trip is three days rather than a week, spending one whole day on this coast may be the wrong call — and a morning at the islet followed by an afternoon at the Guggenheim usually is not.

The other short option
